Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. A scholarly collection examining the intersections of scientific inquiry and artistic practice during the Renaissance. The essays address the Renaissance search for truth and certainty, medicine and humanism, the Paracelsian worldview, musical acoustics, navigation, scientific illustration, mathematical perspective, symbolism, and the involvement of artists in scientific investigation. Based on papers presented at a symposium held at the Folger Institute of Renaissance and Eighteenth-Century Studies and cosponsored by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of History and Technology. Detailed Condition: Good hardcover in a fair dust jacket. Binding appears firm. Boards show light shelfwear at the extremities. Pages are mildly toned but appear clean and unmarked. Dust jacket shows rubbing, scratches, creasing, edgewear, several tears, and chipping with areas of paper loss, most notably along the lower rear panel and around the spine ends. Jacket remains substantially complete and is now best suited for protection rather than a beauty contest. Shipping and Returns: Carefully packed and shipped by KC Midwest Books. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Large 8vo, xxxvi + pp332 with the 61 illustrations, replicating the original 17th-century coloured drawings of wild birds from the manuscript. Hardcover with dust jacket. Dust jacket in new protective sleeve in very good- condition with a small tear to front side of spine, some smudges and a little toning to spine. Publishers binding of green cloth with black and gilt title label to spine in very good condition with a little creasing to top & tail of spine. Inside all pages in near fine condition, clean, tight, and crisp text block. Pages are bright and unmarked throughout with no previous owner signatures or stamps and the 61 bird illustrations still crisp and vivid. Edward Topsell (1572-1625) was an Elizabethan clergyman famous for writing massive, legendary bestiaries packed with real animals and mythical beasts. He wrote a major manuscript on birds around 1613-1614, which was an English translation and alphabetical abridgment of Italian naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi's Ornithologiae. However, Topsell never finished it before he died—it only covered birds starting with A, B, and C (stopping mid-way on page 250). The unique, 248-leaf manuscript sat hidden away in the Henry E. Huntington Library in California for centuries. An very good copy of Topsell's rare, incomplete Elizabethan ornithological manuscript, painstakingly transcribed by Thomas P. Harrsison and F. David Hoeniger and printed for the first time. This copy has a good provenance containing the bookplate of Pete Tate, highly respected ornithologist and the preeminent British authority on the history of avian literature, to front pastedown.…

In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Fine. ~Full cream silk in floral brocade pattern, hand-painted with floral design in black by Laurie Richardson. Minor mark to front board from production (glue showing through). With slipcase made by Mary Carrington, cream slub silk to slipcase boards. 4to (19.6 x 27cm). All edges deckled. Sage green handmade paper endpapers with inclusions. Slight starting at gutter after first blank endpage. Frontis. Printed throughout on all-rag handmade paper from the Papeterie Saint-Gilles. Printed from hand-set Libra type and wooden blocks with an 1882 Albion hand-press. Hand-sewn; 'this book was made by hand' (limitation page). Limited edition of 97 copies (the first 10 hors de commerce), of which this is no. 65. Calligraphic signature by Brender a Brandis, the 'bookwright'. Hand-coloured vignette to limitation page, and further hand-coloured vignette to p. 13. Profusely illustrated throughout with over 60 of Brender a Brandis' wood engraved illustrations of flowers from Shakespeare, several depicted in appropriate settings (the ruins of Kenilworth Castle; Anne Hathaway's cottage near Stratford upon Avon) likely based on sketches by Brender a Brandis during his preparatory visit to England as he researched this volume. Illustrations are accompanied throughout by quotations from Shakespeare, with text by Shakespeare scholar F. David Hoeniger giving cultural, historical, and botanical context for the images. Typesetting and layout are rhythmic, clear, and sometimes innovative, as in the split and tilted engraving for Ophelia's crow-flowers and deadnettles. The illustrations are botanically precise and densely intricate: 'Brender a Brandis' delicate illustrations evoke tremendous texture for a medium as difficult as wood engraving, and have a wild, almost Art Nouveau quality' (Toronto Globe and Mail, referring to the 2006 Porcupine Quill trade edition). Gerard Brender a Brandis (b. 1943) came to Canada with his family in 1947 and is now widely acknowledged as one of Canada's foremost contemporary printmakers. Working out of his home studio in Stratford, Ontario, he is known for his involvement in almost every aspect of the creation of his handmade books, from papermaking and spinning and weaving linen for bookcovers through to typesetting, printing, and bookbinding. A Gathering of Flowers from Shakespeare remains among his most significant and best-loved works. Extremely scarce in this original hand-press edition. ~Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. 1st edn. Hardback. Size: 76pp.…
