Edition originale.Né à Neuss, le peintre et dessinateur Fedor Hoffbauer (1839-1922) vint se fixer à Paris en 1851, et fut naturalisé en 1873. Il était connu en son temps pour sa série de vues de Paris, exposées sous forme de grande toiles dans un diorama aménagé en 1889 sur les Champs-Elysées (au théâtre Marigny), appelé le "Diorama de Paris à travers les âges". Hoffbauer en tira ensuite un livre illustré, Paris à travers les âges, montrant l'évolution des paysages parisiens depuis Lutèce jusqu'à son époque, qui demeure son ouvrage le plus connu.
