Il était connu en son temps pour sa série de vues de Paris, exposées sous forme de grande toiles dans un… diorama aménagé en 1889 sur les Champs-Elysées (au théâtre Marigny), appelé le "Diorama de Paris à travers les âges". Hoffbauer en tira ensuite un livre illustré, Paris à travers les âges, montrant l'évolution des paysages parisiens depuis Lutèce jusqu'à son époque, qui demeure son ouvrage le plus connu. The volume label of volume I has had all the gilt rubbed off. Edges worn through in places. Some scratch marks in the marbled paper of both volumes. Overall a handsome set of copies that are whole and bright in relatively good condition.
