The expansion of dominant powers like the Hellenistic monarchies and the Roman Empire created a demand for local partners who could negotiate a communicable framework, despite the inherent risks of misunderstandings. Concurrently, native communities leveraged their interactions with these dominant groups to express their identities and articulate their interests within this evolving framework. Sie zeigen das Potential des 'Middle Ground' Konzeptes in der Analyse des antiken Nahen Osten, sind aber auch offen für andere Ideen zur kulturellen Interaktion in einer sich wandelnden Welt. Denn Eroberungen und Expansion dominanter Gemeinschaften, wie der hellenistischen Monarchien oder des Römischen Reiches, schufen einen Bedarf an lokalen Partnern, die ihre Position zur Aushandlung eines Verständigungsrahmens nutzten, auch wenn es dabei immer wieder zu Missverständnissen kam.
