In 1968, he founded his own publishing house, Steidl. Gerhard and his publishing company are synonymous with high-quality art books. This is an invaluable reference book and pictorial guide that encompasses Steidl publications for the Fall 2018 and Winter 2019 seasons but also includes other titles, such as the winners of the Asia 8 and Japan 8 Steidl Book Awards contest, limited editions, previously announced books, and backlisted titles. Most, if not all, titles have at least one accompanying illustration. Gerhard summarizes the contents of this book, "There is something I particularly like about the eclectic collection of books in this catalogue. It's not just their diversity--from the classics of American photography, to the young winners of the Asia 8 and Japan 8 awards, to our new limited editions. It's also because of the ambitiousness of their production: from unusual forms and paper stock, to demanding printing and binding techniques. All in all, these books embody for me the best of what I like to call 'Steidl book culture.' They are a fitting way to celebrate 2018, the year that marks the fiftieth anniversary of Steidl.".…
