As well as the terrain the journal describes such things as liitle known wildlife and the garment styles of First Nations people. LEARN about : Rock House, Registe Vaillant, and diet of the Crees. Cond : Boards are buff coloured with gilt lettering on spine (inside a darker band) . End-papers are brown. D.J. is greeney-blue with white lettering. From the blurb The Canadian Arctic is, and always has been, one of the most beautiful but harshest places in the world. The native peoples know and understand it and have come to terms with it. Outsiders going there today have all the advantages of up-to-date knowledge and modern technology to aid them in living and travelling there. Such was not the case, however, in 1819 for a dedicated but ill prepared and ill-equipped group of Englishmen who set out under instructions from the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to seek for the Northwest Passage. They encountered every hardship and hazard during their two-year mission, a mission which culminated, almost invariably, in the loss of many lives. One of those who died was a young midshipman, Robert Hood, who had, in spite of the many dangers and problems that beset the expedition, kept a remarkable and invaluable record, in words and paintings, of the experiences of this, the first Franklin expedition.
