338 pp.; 23.8 x 16 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white; edition size unknown; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed "Fred W. McDarrah - for the past twenty-five years the picture editor of The Village Voice - was present, camera in hand, when the Beats first came east to Greenwich Village. Kerouac and Friends is the definitive photographic record of that period of American literary history. Along with his own remarkable photographs, McDarrah has gathered written documents as well: the writings of some of America's greatest critics, journalists, and historians on the Beat Generation. Here is John Clellon Holmes with the first definition of the term "beat", Kenneth Rexroth on jazz and poetry, Diana Trilling, John Ciardi, Seymour Krim, and even an angry denunciation of the Beats and their work by Norman Podhoretz. All of the great names of the generation are here - those who have endured like Mailer, Ginsberg, Corso, Ferlinghetti, Baraka, Silverstein, Baldwin, and those now only dimly remembered as part of the world the Beats created. The photos depict a Greenwich Village that is no more : quaint folk dancing in Washington Square Park, the Cafe Bizarre, the Eighth Street Bookshop, and Charlie Mingus and Kenneth Patchen doing a jazz and poetry recital at the Living Theater. These photographs - more than 190 in all - and the texts that accompany them form at once an important historical document and a nostalgic look back at a special time in the history of American life and letters." -- publisher's statement. Very Good. Light wear to dust-jacket including scratching and original pricing sticker. Contents clean and unmarked. An authoritative interdisciplinary account of the historic discovery of gravitational wavesIn 1915, Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves-ripples in the fabric of spacetime caused by the movement of large masses-as part of the theory of general relativity. A century later, researchers with the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) confirmed Einstein's prediction, detecting gravitational waves generated by the collision of two black holes. Shedding new light on the hundred-year history of this momentous achievement, Einstein Was Right brings together essays by two of the physicists who won the Nobel Prize for their instrumental roles in the discovery, along with contributions by leading scholars who offer unparalleled insights into one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of our time. This illuminating book features an introduction by Tilman Sauer and invaluable firsthand perspectives on the history and significance of the LIGO consortium by physicists Barry Barish and Kip Thorne. Theoretical physicist Alessandra Buonanno discusses the new possibilities opened by gravitational wave astronomy, and sociologist of science Harry Collins and historians of science Diana Kormos Buchwald, Daniel Kennefick, and Jürgen Renn provide further insights into the history of relativity and LIGO. The book closes with a reflection by philosopher Don Howard on the significance of Einstein's theory for the philosophy of science.Edited by Jed Buchwald, Einstein Was Right is a compelling and thought-provoking account of one of the most thrilling scientific discoveries of the modern age.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The current volume in the Stress and Anxiety series focuses on peer-reviewed papers in four thematically different areas. The first collection of papers relates to a range of issues in schools and school children: stress and coping among preschoolers, among children aged 7-11 years and those children with at risk behaviours and those experiencing test anxiety, as well as stress and intention to quit among teachers. Next is the impact of stress on people's well-being in particular stress, and economic deprivation in particular, as predictors of depression and on cardiovascular reactivity. Coping, including resilience and adjustment, is addressed in the third section where there is an emphasis on appraisal, cognitions and comedy. The final chapters are contemporaneous as they present two opposing views on the internet and cyberspace: the internet as social support coping, alternatively as an escape or avoidant strategy. Grey's box -- An opportune encounter -- The "true key" to Egyptian hieroglyphs -- The semantic trap avoided -- The reception of the Pre?cis -- "Hold your laughter, friends!" ; "In 1799, a French officer was clearing debris from a military installation when he discovered a stele bearing three scripts: ancient Greek, hieroglyphic, and a third that could not be definitively identified. This artifact, which came to be known as the Rosetta Stone, has traditionally played the starring role in the history of decipherment, which has until now been understood as an instance of code-breaking, a kind of Bletchley Park avant la lettre. In The Riddle of the Rosetta, Buchwald and Josefowicz delve into a wide array of British and French sources as well as archival material to produce a comprehensive new history of the decipherment. More than a puzzle-solving exercise based on a single artifact, the decipherment engaged with the era's social, cultural and intellectual contexts. It grew in the midst of heated disputes about language, historical evidence, the status of the Bible, the nature of polytheism, and the importance of classical learning. Jean-Franc?ois Champollion in France and his British rival, the medical doctor and polymath Thomas Young, approached the decipherment from different standpoints derived from their contrasting temperaments, educational experiences, and attitudes to antiquity. Imbued with reverence for Greek culture and raised a Quaker, Young disdained Egyptian culture and saw Egyptian writing principally as a way to uncover new knowledge about Greco-Roman antiquity. To him, the decipherment was akin to a challenge posed by a problem in mathematics or science. Champollion's altogether different motivations and attitude unfolded amidst the political chaos of Restoration France, in fierce response to the intrigues of opposing scholars aligned with throne and altar. Unlike Young, Champollion admired ancient Egypt, and this sympathy, coupled with his willingness to upend conventional wisdom about the enigmatic Egyptian signs, freed him to travel a path down which Young refused to go. A remarkable intellectual adventure reaching from the filthy back streets of Georgian London to the hushed lecture rooms of the Institut de France, from the forgotten byways of provincial France to the splendor of the Valley of the Kings, this book reveals the decipherment in its full historical complexity" ; FINE/FINE. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Howard Buchwald (illustrator). Limited Edition of 160 copies. This is Number 91. Signed by both William S. Burroughs and Howard Buchwald. The book has 20 numbered pages, though the text ends on the 21st page which is unnumbered and contains the Limitation information as well as the signatures a little below its last sentence. Two pages forward you will find the verbiage I have quoted below. The book is in excellent condition. You can see the covers in the photos. They are perfectly clean. I believe you would describe the lettering on the spine as gently debossed. The cover edges are in very nice shape, just a tiny bit of superficial rubbing just adjacent to the top and bottom edges of the spine. The four corners also each have a tiny spot of superficial rubbing. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in terrific condition. I have turned over every page. They are all perfectly clean, not even a speck. The same goes for the inside covers and all of the end papers. There are three (six sides) front blank end papers and there are four (eight sides) rear blank end papers. Again, all perfectly clean. I didn't see any creasing on any the pages, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And there is no writing other than the two aforementioned signatures. From the last page: 'The Soft Machine was published in 1961 by Olympia Press in Paris; in 1967 by Grove Press in New York; and in 1968 by Calder & Boyers in London; among other editions. Each successive edition contained revisions and additional material and in particular the 1968 version contained sections written in the mid-1960's employing the newly-perfected cut-up technique. The Streets Of Chance is a complete story found in the 1968 version and nowhere else. On January 30, 1981, Mr. Burroughs oversaw revisions of the text by James Grauerholz and Steve Miller, and that is this version. The cover and text illustrations were created by Howard Buchwald. Alice Koeth designed and drew the title page. Out of Sorts Foundry produced the Optima type on a Thompson typecaster from Lino-type matrices; it was hand-set. The paper is Frankfurt. Twelfth Night Bindery hand-bound the edition in Buckram, with serigraphy by Springraphics. The project was imagined and produced at Red Ozier's Chelsea workshop by Ken Botnick and Steve Miller.'.
