Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Set in a rural community in the early 20th century, Red and Monk revolves around the lives of Sarah, Russ, their families, and the connections they form together and within their community. Sarah, a young woman yearning for a life beyond the farm, works in a mill. She reflects on her strict upbringing, limited education, and dreams of a better future. The tragic death of her brother in a car accident deeply impacts her and her family. Russ, a hardworking young man, leaves school to support his family's farm. As his father's health deteriorates, he assumes greater responsibility. Responsible and kind, Russ eventually forms a connection with Sarah. Pastoral and complex, Red and Monk also highlights various community events and introduces colorful characters, such as accident-prone Reverend Zane Norton and outspoken Burton Puett. The story of Sarah, Russ, and a network of surrounding characters explores themes of family, duty, loss, and self-discovery, all while portraying the simplicity of rural life, customs, and the significance of community support.About the AuthorDave Huffstetler, a graduate of Appalachian State University with a B.S. in English, has been writing seriously for 15 years. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Gaston County had its heyday in the 1950s and 60s; it was claimed that during that era there were over one hundred textile, or 'cotton,' mills in Gastonia alone. The proliferation of the flight of the industry to other countries depleted that situation greatly, but in the author's youth it was a thriving area. The annual county fair, located in nearby Lowell, was entitled the 'Spindle Center Fair,' a reference to the cylinder on spinning frames in those mills; this cylinder was known as a bobbin, or 'spindle.'It was a time of prosperity, mills running 24/7, three shifts year-round; virtually all of them would shut down, or 'stand,' the week of the Fourth of July. Many of the short stories in Spindle Center Tales were set in that era and location.About the AuthorDave Huffstetler has been writing seriously for fourteen years. He graduated from Appalachian State University in 1977 with a BS in English. After college he began work as a construction laborer, matriculating to carpenter, general contractor, and real estate broker, and in the last nineteen years of his career he toiled as a city building inspector. He is presently retired and living in Raleigh. He grew up outside Dallas, North Carolina, on a small farm. A good portion of his writings involve his experiences growing up in rural Gaston County and all the people he encountered. His writings span free verse poetry, novellas, many short stories, and one novel. He has said that he is particularly indebted to his family.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - This novella, The Prophet Ezekiel, was first written about ten years ago and combines elements of emancipation, redemption, searching for truth, deception, and a generous dose of piedmont North Carolina humor. The Prophet Ezekiel tells of a young man's search for purpose and the avenues he pursues in this quest, including seeking out consorts of a shady evangelist. It is at times insightful, at times ribald, but always pure Gaston County.About the AuthorDave Huffstetler has been writing seriously for fourteen years.
