FIRST EDITION. 39pp. Occasional light spotting. Orig. drab boards, paper label on front board; spine darkened & little worn. Suffolk-born Hugman, c.1770-1846, was a tanner by trade, but sold his business in 1822 and become an itinerant poet, wandering mainly in East Anglia and selling his poems with different regional imprints. A 17th edition of this work, with a Halesworth imprint, was published in 1835. There are 13 poems in this volume, including a Monody on Lord Nelson, The Deaf and Dumb Boy, and On the Greatness and Fall of Buonaparte.…

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Seventeenth edition (!), so stated on title page. 12mo. Orig. boards, original printed paper title label on front cover. Right edge of front board with a bit of a faint water stain, otherwise very good. Some of the poems are topical and date from the time of the Napoleonic Wars, such as Monody on the Death of the Ever to Be Lamented Lord Nelson and On the Greatness and Fall of Buonaparte. Other titles are A Similitude between Life and the Game of Bowls (for anyone compiling a bowling bibliography), Invocation to Apollo, The Deaf and Dumb Boy, etc. After having gone bankrupt as a tanner, Hugman (1770-1846) began an apparently more successful career as an itinerant poet and entertainer. Editions of his poems were vended in various places as he toured with place-appropriate imprints, but probably all were done by Thomas Tippell, a printer in his home town of Halesworth.…

Eighth edition. [2], 42pp. Original publisher's buff paper boards, printed paper lettering-piece to upper board. Rubbed and dulled, loss to head and foot of spine. Internally clean and crisp. A provincially published collection of verse, in original state, by Suffolk artist John Hugman (bap. 1770, d. 1846), including topical poems from the time of the Napoleonic Wars: 'On the greatness and fall of Buonaparte. As recited by the Author at a public dinner, April 18, 1814' and 'Monody on the death of the ever to be lamented Lord Nelson, Recited by the Author at a Public Dinner'. A seventeenth edition appeared by 1835. All editions are scarce. COPAC and OCLC record a single copy of this eighth edition (BL). Not in Jackson. Size: 8vo. …

Thirteenth edition. 42pp. Original publisher's green boards, printed paper lettering-piece to upper board. Extremities rubbed and marked. Later bookplate to FEP, very occasional light spotting. An unsophisticated of the provincially published collected verse of Suffolk artist John Hugman (bap. 1770, d. 1846); including topical poems from the time of the Napoleonic Wars, such as 'Monody on the Death of the Ever to Be Lamented Lord Nelson' and 'On the Greatness and Fall of Buonaparte'. Jackson p.569. Size: 8vo. …

Small 8vo, pp. [ii], 41; a fine copy, uncut in the original drab boards, upper cover with original printed paper label. Contemporary ownership inscription of Mary Anne Day, York, 1827; and later one of Grace Sophia Hood, 1853. A tanner from Halesworth, Suffolk, John Hugman (1770-1846) travelled the country selling his poems - it seems that as he went from town to town he had new editions printed. This one, the fourth, was preceded by editions printed at Brighton and Colchester, and many later editions were printed elsewhere, including at Halesworth itself. Most of the editions have the title 'in the amatory, heroic, pathetic, and other styles', but it seems that Hugman may have found 'moral' a more acceptable title for his customers, although it may have varied from place to place. The tally editions seems to have gone as high as the 17th (Halesworth, 1835), although many may have been new issues, rebadging old sheets with new title pages. Copac gives only two locations for this edition, the BL and Cambridge UL.…

Orig. drab boards, paper label; neatly rebacked. D. Wickham booklabel. 39pp. With printed label on leading pastedown, 'Relics of Charles Lamb. Purchased at Edward Moxon's sale by Francis Jackson, Esq.' The sale supposedly took place after Moxon's death in 1858, with Francis Jackson, who claimed to have been a friend of Lamb's, purchasing numerous volumes. Latterly, there has been research into Jackson and his grandson Richard C. Jackson, much of it concluding that there was no real connection between the Lambs and the Jacksons, and that the provenance of the 'Relics' is likely to have been fabricated. See G.E. Bentley's article 'Richard C. Jackson, Collector of Treasures and Wishes: Walter Pater, Charles Lamb, William Blake in An Illustrated Blake Quarterly, Volume 36, Issue 3, Winter 2002/2003.
