Joints are rubbed and tender; foxing throughout, with some heavier staining (and pencil drawings) to the last leaf. This copy with Thaddeus Lyon's name in ink on the title page. Additionally,… Eppa Hunton's ownership signature on one of the front blank leaves. A significant figure in the Confederate pantheon, Colonel Eppa Hunton took command of the 8th Virginia Infantry in 1861 and that July under Gen P. T. Beauregard, Hunton's brigade helped to halt a Union advance on Richmond. He distinguished himself at Ball's Bluff and then commanded Pickett's brigade after Pickett's wounding at Gaines' Mill. Hunton led Pickett's men through the balance of the Peninsula Campaign, acquitting himself with distinction. Hunton's brigade was with Pickett at Gettysburg after which he was promoted to brigadier general for his valor. During the last stages of the war, Hunton was involved in battles around Richmond including Cold Harbor and Five Forks. He was captured at Sayle's Creek on August 6, 1865 and was imprisoned for three months at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor. American Imprints 20089.

One of 100 copies printed (this is no. 36),… signed by Eppa Hunton IV, the author's grandson, on the colophon page. Additionally, this copy is inscribed by him on the front pastedown: "Mr. Jefferson P. Chandler, with kindest regards of his friend Eppa Hunton IV Oct. 6 1933 See pages 212 + 214." Chandler was one of Hunton's law partners, who is described on p. 212 as "one of the finest jury lawyers in the city." Eppa Hunton's memoirs are among the rarest and most desirable works written by a Confederate. He commanded the 8th Virginia, Pickett's Division, for the duration of the war. The unit participated in every major campaign in the Eastern theater, and Col. Hunton earned a promotion to brigadier-general for his outstanding gallantry during the division's fatal charge at Gettysburg. After he recovered from a wound he received there, he returned to Longstreet's corps and led his regiment until his capture only days before Lee's surrender at Appomattox. "Although written by a Confederate general, these reminiscences contain many insights into the life of the Southern GI" - Nevins I, 109. In addition to his national political service following the war, he wrote an autobiography that was not published until 1933; it is one of the rarest and most sought after of Civil War memoirs.
