From its earliest days in a cold, rented room in a former Christchurch warehouse, the Canterbury Workers' Educational Association has been a pioneering provider of adult education, enriching, and sometimes even transforming, the lives of thousands of men and women. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. This is the story of a pioneering folk hero. It is a colourful tale of adventure, discovery and survival in the remotest areas of New Zealands Southern Alps.William James OLeary was a man of humble origins. His lifetime (1865-1947) spanned a period of New Zealand history when the country was searching for homegrown heroes in whose lives the young nation could discover clues to the question of its identity. The decades OLeary spent in the unforgiving mountain country of North-West Otago and South Westland, prospecting for gold and other minerals and making new tracks in unexplored areas, was bound to be regarded with envy and admiration by townsfolk. The myth-making process was assisted when the nickname Arawata Bill stuck, but it is the mans astonishing feats of endurance, tenacity and charming eccentricity which capture the imagination. Add in the mystery of a lost ruby mine, a seaboot full of gold sovereigns and the aura of secrecy surrounding the quest for precious metal, and you have the stuff of which legends are made. Generations of New Zealand schoolchildren are familiar with Denis Glovers poem Arawata Bill, yet the subject of that work was only loosely based on William OLeary. The man himself, in his solitary and self-effacing way, was both smaller and greater than the legend. He emerged as one of those archetypal New Zealanders who helped to define a distinctive nationality. In this biography, Ian Dougherty has separated the man from the myth, with a warmly human portrait of an ordinary man who lived an extraordinary life. Soft cover. Zustand: As New. This copy feels unread. Born in 1865, O'Leary spent decades exploring the remote and rugged mountains of South Westland and North-West Otago. He was known for his endurance, independence, and quiet determination. He wasn't a flashy character—he lived simply, often alone, and kept searching for gold long after most had given up. His nickname, "Arawata Bill," came from the Arawhata River region where he spent much of his life. Over time, stories of his adventures, his seaboot full of gold sovereigns, and the rumour of a lost ruby mine helped turn him into a mythic figure. …

Stated First Edition, First Printing. From the publisher's blurb, "Biography of New Zealand publisher A. H. Reed (1875-1975). Black-and-white and colour photographic illustrations. "A.H. Reed's enduring contribution to his adopted homeland was as a publisher, writer and benefactor, but he is fondly remembered by many as a long-distance walker. He was born in England in 1875 and migrated to New Zealand with his family in 1887. With the barest of formal education, he transcended his working roots in the Northland gumfields to found and nurture the publishing firm of A.H. & A.W. Reed. The firm?s first publications were for Sunday Schools, as Reed and his wife Belle were dedicated Christians. But Reed was also a keen businessman, and expanded his publishing to include a growing range of books on New Zealand history and culture. He officially retired in 1940 but continued to be involved in the firm's publishing policy and to write prodigiously, with significant contributions to travel writing in books about his long-distance walks, including one between Sydney and Melbourne. He was also a book collector. This biography of Reed is written for the general reader. What is there new to say about one who wrote so much? It offers an engaging portrait of 'Alf', his love of Belle, his ceaseless activity, his humble life, his generosity and his many contributions to the wider community. It is an interesting and accessible portrait of a fascinating man. The book includes a bibliography of his works."
