Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. First Edition. Hungarian Imre Nagy was first of all a Communist. He was also an idealist and a patriot. After a career in the Russian Communist Party in World War II, he returned to his native Hungary and became Minister of Agriculture and a leader of the Hungarian Communist Party. He became Prime Minister of Hungary in July 1953 and to the fury of the USSR, criticized Russian Communism as "static" when it needed to change with the changing post war times. Nagy introduced a set of liberalized policies for Hungarian Communism which he called the "New Course." Out of favor with the Soviets, Nagy was deprived of all party posts and in April, 1955, sacked as Hungarian prime minister. At that time, he began work on this book to explain his "new course." He became prime minister by popular demand in October, 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution. As Prime Minisiter, he moved to withdraw the country from the Soviet dominated Warsaw Pact and appealed to western powers for help. The Soviet army crushed the rebellion within weeks and Nagy sought political asylum in the Yugoslave embassy but was kidnapped, arrested and secretly returned to Hungary, where he was later secretly tried for treason and other crimes against the state, found guilty, and hanged in 1958. His trial and execution were only made public after the sentence was carried out. This copy of Nagy's book is a First Printing, First UK edition. 306 pages in black cloth-covered boards with gold lettering on the spine and the gold-stamped Thames & Hudson logo on the front cover. The text includes a publisher's note on how the original manuscript was smuggled out of Hungary through the "Iron Curtain" in 1957 with Nagy's fate still unknown, as well as a foreword by Hugh Seton-Watson and an epilogue by George Paloczi-Horvath. Page 193-194 dogeared due to a printing production error, a touch of wear at the corners and edges, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square, not remaindered. The dustjacket is well-worn, with a 3 x 1/2 inch strip torn from the bottom edge of the rear panel (perhaps as a bookmark?}. Spine ends and edges are worn and chipped and there is a 2-inch tear on the fold between the rear panel and flap. That noted, the dj, now in a mylar protector, remains 90% whole with all its lettering and design elements basically intact including the original price in the bottom corner of the front flap. A small, collectable piece of the history of our world's ideologies and politics.
