Hardback. Zustand: Fine. Austen, John (illustrator). First. Arnold Bennett was an amazingly prolific writer. Not only did he produce 34 novels, he wrote short stories, successful plays and later silent movie scripts, popular self-help books, was an active journalist, and even briefly ran the British Ministry of Information during World War I. He was one of the best selling authors of the late 19th/early 20th century. His reputation declined after his death in 1935 but has been reevaluated in recent years. Yet this book, "The Old Wives' Tale," originally published in 1908, which follows the lives of two very different sisters from their youth into old age, has always been considered one of his very best works, even by his critics. This is a particularly lovely edition, and in excellent condition. The cover has a floral pattern reminiscent of William Morris. There are full-page color drawings throughout, as well as half-page black-and-white drawings at the beginning of every chapter. The text block is tight and there are no marks, creases, or tears on the pages. The only damage is slight, where what appears to have been a book plate was removed from the inside of the back cover. There is a bit of confusion within the industry about the copyright date: The Heritage Press was originally created as the Limited Editions Club by George Macy to produce fine editions of reprints of classic works. By the time this work was published, Macy had dropped the "limited editions" part of its remit and changed the imprint's name but the fineness of the books it published remained. The book itself says the Macy copyrighted the book in 1940, but the Library of Congress, acknowledging that in its catalog, says the Heritage Press published it in1947. Regardless, you can be assured of getting a distinguished copy with this book. See our photos.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: None. First edition, second printing - 1916. Full bound blue cloth boards, with some bubbbling to front and creasing to rear board. Gilt lettering to front board, but gilt to spine has worn away. Solid binding, with slight lean. Some browning of pages. Frontispice tissue guard has left brown stain to near full extent of title page. 149 pages, 23 B&W photos. This book collects the letters written by Harold Rosher during the war years from August 1914 up to his death at age 22 in February 1916. These letters provide a uniquely personal glimpse of one young Englishman's experiences during World War One - all the more fascinating as they document a period early in the development of the aircraft as a weapon of war. As the Introduction states: "[The letters] are spontaneous and utterly unstudied documents, and they have been printed almost exactly as Harold wrote them. Many of them are quite ordinary; most are spiced with slang; the long ones describing his share in the great historic raids are thrillingly dramatic.".
