Mallory (1886-1924). Unter dem Originaltitel "The romance of mountaineering" bereits 1935 in London erschienen, war eine Veröffentlichung der deutschen Übersetzung dieses alpinhistorischen Werkes erst nach dem 2. Weltkrieg möglich. In der Einleitung äußert sich Irving folgendermaßen: "Zweierlei war meine Absicht: Einen Abriß der Geschichte des Bergsteigens zu schreiben, und die Rolle zu schildern, die der Mensch in den Bergen gespielt hat". Dabei verwendete der Autor auch Auszüge aus den Originalwerken.

Die Schilderung der Durchsteigung der Nordwestwand der Skrlatica, der Ersteigung des Montasch über den Drachengrat und über die Nordwand, der Unternehmungen in der Nordwand des Triglav, der Fahrten in den berühmtesten Wänden des Wilden Kaisers und in den Aiguilles des Mont Blanc sind Meisterwerke alpiner Darstellung, die außerdem noch der gewiß nicht zu verachtende Reiz eines echten, verhaltenen englischen Humors auszeichnet. Was Irving über die innere Einstellung des Menschen zum Berg und über sein Tun auf diesem sagt, ist zweifellos das Wertvollste, was wir seit langer Zeit zu hören bekommen. Mag auch der eine oder andere Leser eine grundsätzlich andere Einstellung zu Dingen wie "Mechanisierung des Bergsteigens" und "Kult der Gefahr" haben und nicht immer mit allem einverstanden sein, was Irving darüber zu sagen hat, keinen wird es geben, der nicht gezwungen wird, sich selbst mit den angeschnittenen Problemen auseinanderzusetzen. Die Abschnitte "Volkscharakter im Spiegel der Berge", "Bergsteigen außerhalb der gewöhnlichen Jahreszeiten" und vor allem jene über das "Alleingehen" und über die "Einstellung zu den Bergen", gehören unbestreitbar zu dem Besten, was hierüber jemals geschrieben wurde.
