Ratures et corrections. bon Rares et très intéressants manuscrits d'observations et d'expériences sur les "couleurs accidentelles" par Isaac Bénédict Prévost ; ce phénomène, qui avait été soulevé par Buffon, sera étudié par Chevreul. Le premier décrit (avec quelques croquis) des expériences réalisées en avril 1817 dans une chambre obscure. Le second est intitulé : "Sur les couleurs dites accidentelles. Nouveaux moyens de donner lieu à diverses sensations du genre de celles que l'on a ainsi nommées". L'auteur, Bénédict Prévost, précise, en introduction, les circonstances de ses découvertes. "Je dis nouveaux moyens, parce que je crois qu'ils sont encore comme tels, quoique j'aie trouvé le principal, et pour ainsi dire le fondamental, il y a une vingtaine d'années ; que je l'aie décrit, avec figure, dans une lettre adressée en 1800 à mon parent, M. le professeur P[ierre] Prévost de Genève, que je l'ai exposé, que j'ai fait chez moi, en présence de plusieurs de mes disciples, la plupart des expériences qui y sont relatives dans mes cours depuis cinq ou six ans et que j'en ai parlé il y a plus de trois ans et demie dans une séance de la Société de physique et d'histoire naturelle de Genève [.]". [Cette lettre, lue à cette société le 3 floréal an 9, sera publiée dans le Journal de physique, de chimie et d'histoire naturelle de brumaire an 12 (tome LVII)]. Naturaliste, agronome et savant genevois, il passa une grande partie de sa vie à Montauban où il enseignait à la faculté. Il a découvert le champignon responsable de la carie du blé et son traitement par le sulfate de cuivre. Il était le cousin de Pierre Prévost.
