A well-known nineteenth-century Dutch book about the Garebeg (or Grebeg), a large public Javanese royal ceremony held at the kraton (palace) in Yogyakarta, in which the sultan distributes food mountains (gunungan) of rice and delicacies to the crowd in honor of important Islamic holidays such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and Mawlid al-Nabi (the Prophet's birthday). He was a Javanese photographer at the court of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. He was the first Indonesian native to become a professional photographer. He was trained at the request of Sultan Hamengkoeboewono VI (1821-1877, reigned 1855 - 1877). His work in preserving Java's heritage was rewarded with membership in the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde van Nederlandsch-Indië, and the award of the Gold Medal of Honor.…
