A good copy only, given that the covers and fly-leave…s are loose, the cloth back strip is partially missing, the boards are edge worn scuffed and worn through at the fore-corner tips--BUT the interior is in very good condition, paper clean, supple (pre-civil war paper was of a generally higher quality) only lightly yellowed, and relatively unfoxed. Still a good reading copy of this mostly original compendium of the culture in the middle of the 19th Century. A period time-capsule of the intellectual state of mind.

Foxed in part in the beginning, remarkably bright later on. In fine condition. Handsome copy. ~ FIRST EDITION. Translated from the original English manuscript by Benjamin Laroche. The second edition was published two years later (Paris, Poulton-de-l'Épée, 1835). James Silk Buckingham (1786-1855). A dedicated traveller and a prolific writer, he wrote, among others, also "Travels In Palestine Through the Countries of Bashan and Gilead" (1921); "Travels Among the Arab Tribes Inhabiting the Countries East of Syria and Palestine" (1925); "Travels in Mesopotamia" (1827); "Travels in Assyria Media and Persia" (1830). [Provenance:] From the private library of Auguste de Blignières with his small, unassuming bookplate inside cover. Auguste Le Barbier de Blignières (1825-1851) was a professor of rhetoric at the Collège Stanislas in Paris. He wrote many books on language and grammar, and is well known for his book "Essai sur Amyot et les traducteurs français au XVIe siècle" (Paris, 1851) about Jacques Amyot (1513-1593), the French Renaissance writer and translator.
