There are not any library markings on the title page or fron…t pastedown. Aside from the library markings (which could be readily ameliorated), Very Good. First Edition. Although Paul Ehrlich is listed as the first author on the title page, this is a book by McDonagh. Ehrlich's contribution is a 2-page Preface (pp. v-vi; see photos). Quoting from that Preface: "I am glad to have the opportunity of writing the introduction to this book, since Mr. McDonagh from the beginning, as the first observer in England, has devoted the greatest attention to treatment of syphilis by 'Salvarsan', and has succeeded in obtaining some most excellent results. . . . I believe that this short work, which sets forth very clearly Mr. McDonagh's large clinical experience, should prove of the greatest value to every reader, since I have always considered him as one of the most successful pioneers in establishing the best method of administering the drug, its dosage, as well as when it should be repeated, so that the very best results may be expected by following his advice." Quoting from an obituary of McDonagh in the British Medical Journal, February 27, 1965: "Although a surgeon by qualification and training, he did not follow the beaten path, and made research the main issue in his career, especially in the treatment of venereal disease. . . . An event of great interest in his life was the decision of Ehrlich, the discoverer of the cure for syphilis, to entrust to McDonagh the first consignment to this country of the new drug Salvarsan 606 which transformed the treatment of the disease." In 1912, the year after the book offered here, McDonagh published his book Salvarsan in Syphilis and Allied Diseases, which ends with these words about Paul Ehrlich: "Ehrlich has done mankind a service which takes rank along with those of Lister and Jenner. To him the thanks will come as it has always come to the truly great--when his fellow men are worthy to understand him which generally happens in the succeeding century. To him the honour: to the writer merely the pleasant task of elaborating the uses, and condemning the abuses, of his master's discovery." ABOUT THE BINDING: I have seen two versions of the binding for this book. This copy is stamped in gilt on the front cover: A System of Syphilis Edited by D'Arcy Power and J. Keogh Murray. And on the spine it is stamped in gilt: A System of Syphilis Supplement. The other version of the binding is stamped on the front cover: "606" in Theory and Practice Ehrlich and McDonagh. In both versions, the front cover is stamped: Oxford Medical Publications. "Oxford Medical Publications" is also printed on the title page.
