Onmiddelijk rees de vraag waarvan dit bouwsel aan de Nieuwezijds Kolk een overblijfsel kon zijn. Was het het legendarische 'kasteel' van de Heren van Amstel, in de literaire traditie bekend van Vondels Gijsbrecht? Een adellijk slot heeft zich echter in de geschiedenis van Amsterdam, waar de traditie juist was dat de van oorsprong eenvoudige bewoners de stad op eigen kracht groot hadden gemaakt, altijd moeilijk laten inpassen, maar was aantrekkelijk genoeg om aanhang te vinden.
