Hardcover. 293p., hardbound in 8x5 inch dark brown cloth boards gilt-titled, with top edge gilt. A once-handsome book bound too stiffly to open well, and is currently a fair-only copy with an air of dereliction. An old paper label is fixed crookedly to spine, find gaps between signatures in the textblock (revealing threads), dust. As is, thus a reading copy of an early embrace of Darwin's observations by an almost-orthodox Christian doctor of divinity.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the role of Moravian immigrants in shaping Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, during the 18th century. As part of a larger German migration, these religious settlers brought a unique blend of practices and beliefs that would significantly impact the region's development. The author delves into the Moravians' motivations for leaving their homeland and their distinctive approach to Christianity, which emphasized unity and service. Their arrival in Pennsylvania coincided with a period of spiritual decline among German settlers, and the Moravians sought to address this by establishing churches and schools, offering guidance and fostering a sense of community. Through meticulous research, the author traces the Moravians' influence on various aspects of Lebanon County life, including religious practices, education, and cultural traditions. The book highlights the contributions of notable figures like Peter Kucher, who played a pivotal role in establishing the Hebron congregation and providing refuge during conflicts with Native Americans. The author argues that the Moravians' legacy extends beyond their immediate impact, as their emphasis on education and community laid the foundation for the county's future prosperity and civic engagement. This insightful work illuminates a lesser-known chapter in Pennsylvania's history, demonstrating the profound influence of religious communities in shaping the social fabric of early America. In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the complicated relationship between science and religion, particularly Evolution and Christianity. Published in 1888, this text is an important historical document detailing the intellectual struggle with reconciling the two disciplines. The author argues that they do not contradict but in fact support one another. The author demonstrates how both evolution and Christianity acknowledge the existence of a Supreme Being and the unity of all things. The book also addresses how an understanding of evolution supports the Christian doctrines of sin, redemption, and the importance of prayer. The author argues that, when understood correctly, evolution does not destroy but deepens our faith in God's wisdom, goodness, and love.
