Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Hellenistic-Roman Alexandria is often characterized as a cosmopolis; a city that would represent the quintessential cultural crossroads of the ancient world. The aim of this volume is to critically discuss, unwrap and develop this idea. After a set of (theoretical) introductions, first the network Alexandria was part of is explored in a more global, Afro-Eurasian sense than is traditionally done. What about Alexandrias connections with China, India, Central Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, the African Sahara and (western) Europe? Second, the relation between the global node that was Alexandria and the many processes of innovation that characterized the city during the Hellenistic-Roman era are investigated through a variety of specifically selected case studies: from medicine to poetry and from the citys famous tombs to its exotic animals. Global dynamics prove to be at the core of Hellenistic-Roman Alexandria and its innovative character. In this volume literary critics, historians and archaeologists join forces in investigating this phenomenon in terms of appropriation and cultural change. In-depth interpretations of famous ancient spoliations, like that of the Greeks after Plataea or the Romans after the capture of Jerusalem, reveal a fascinating paradox: while the material record shows an eager incorporation of new objects, the texts display abhorrence of the negative effects they were thought to bring along. As this volume demonstrates, both reactions testify to the crucial innovative impact objects from abroad may have.

This book presents an exploration of the recently discovered coral species Pseudocladochonus hicksoni - an exciting addition to the field of marine biology. The author places this new species within the context of other Alcyonaria, examining its relation to the Telestidae family. Detailed descriptions of the species' morphology, discovery, and taxonomic classification are included. The book explores the remarkable similarities between Pseudocladochonus hicksoni and the extinct genus Cladocrinus, leading to fascinating discussions on convergent evolution and the diversity of life throughout Earth's history. The author's findings highlight the ongoing process of scientific discovery and shed light on the intriguing complexity of marine ecosystems. rectangular orange label pasted into margin of page 276 for no apparent reason, otherwise fresh attractive green hardcover with printed, decorated covers. VERSLUYS, M. J. Aegyptiaca Romana: nilotic scenes and the Roman views of Egypt. Leiden ; Boston, MA: Brill, 2002, xiv, 509pp., . Religions in the Graeco-Roman world v. 144. - This archaeological study investigates the meaning of the Egyptian and egyptianising artefacts that have been preserved from the Roman world in different ways. Its point of departure is a detailed study on the so-called Nilotic scenes or Nilotic landscapes. The book presents a comprehensive and illustrated catalogue of the genre that was popular all around the Mediterranean from the Hellenistic period to the Christian era as well as a contextualisation and interpretation. Drawing on the conclusions thus reached the whole group of Aegyptiaca Romana is subsequently studied. Based on a general overview of this material in the Roman world and, moreover, a case-study of the Aegyptiaca from the city of Rome the different meanings of this cultural phenomenon are mapped. Together with other Egyptian deities popular in the Roman world, the goddess Isis plays an important role in this discussion. Aegyptiaca Romana, among them the Nilotic scenes, are part of the reflection of the Roman attitude towards and thoughts on Egypt, Egyptian culture and the East. The concluding part of the book illustrates and tries to explain this Roman discourse on Egypt. - CONTENTS: I. Introduction. 1. The relations between Rome and Egypt. 2.
