Literally as new.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 258 pages; Physical desc. : xxix, 258 p. : ill. , ports. ; 24 cm. I Includes bibliographical references (p. 250) and index. Subject: United States --Army - Surgeons --Malpractice --Courts-martial and courts of inquiry --Trials (Military offenses) --American history: c1800 to c1900 --Warfare and defence --Medicine, Military --History --USA --Civil War. Summary: As in his previous book, "Tarnished Eagles", Thomas Lowry - this time with Jack Welsh - brings to light the various misdeeds of Union officers. In this new book, the authors examine the relationship between the principles of the medical profession and the often Bzantine regulations of the army. As a result, the courts-martial in this book primarily fall into two categories: failure to practice proper medicine and failure to follow the procedures and administrative rules that govern army life, with some overlap. As usual, Lowry peppers many of these accounts with his dry wit, but he also offers penetrating analyses of the problems faced by many of these doctors, who often were forced to work under intolerable conditions. 3 Kg.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. A clean crisp well preserved 2006 Mercer University Press hardcover in a fine tight binding. Little to no shelf wear. Text is bright and free of marks or underlining. Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. This work provides in-depth information and analysis of Confederate medicine in the Army of Tennessee using primary sources and individual patient records in a form not previously available. There are 213 diagnosis, approximately 18,000 patients for thirteen states, and more than 860 numbered and named units. The two hospitals under discussion originated in Atlanta in 1862 and moved to Vineville, Georgia, in 1864 before Atlanta fell. One later moved to Cornith to support General John B.Hood. They both finally closed in Opelika, Alabama in 1865. Effects of changing numbers of admissions, three major relocations, limited bed space, at times too few surgeons, and the the disintegrating Southern railroad system are detailed. Since the original data are derived from various primary sources with different methods of recording and some incomplete records, the data and the methods of collecting and collating it are described. Use of individual patient records allowed analysis of Confederate Army of Tennessee disease patterns and patient dispositions. Patient care was also impacted by frequent changes in rules and regulations, and orders in response to military events. Prognostications, the ability to predict outcome of diseases and wounds, were required by the surgeons to carry out the various orders determining patient disposition. This aspect of Civil War medicine has not been previously discussed. Problems with comparing various published Civil War medical data with the present material are examined. Included in the book is a CD-ROM of the complete patient listings of more than 18,000 patients.
