Original dark brown cloth rubbed, stains to front board and spine, large but light discoloration to rear board, spine head bumped with short tears at top of joints, 3cm loss at spine heel with some gouging into the quires, light abrasion along board edges with corners bumped and nicked. Soiling and foxing to endpapers; pencil initials on front pastedown; faint moisture stains to bottom corners of initial leaves; a few page corners creased; occasionally mild foxing on interior leaves. Reverend Jackson was evidently a minister in Winchester, Virginia at the time the book was published for his Preface is dated from that small town in the Blue Ridge mountains. OCLC attributes authorship to William Myers Jackson who died in 1855. This date corresponds to the death of a Reverend William Jackson who served as the minister at Norfolk, Virginia's prominent St. Paul's Church from 1849 to 1855 (upon his demise from yellow fever) but it would require further research to verify whether it is the same individual. Only a fair copy but apparently a rather uncommon book for OCLC cites only nine copies among member libraries.…

Preceded by the 1781 American edition of only 200 copies and the 1782 first English edition, neither of which included the Declaration of Rights, the Petition to the King, the Non-Importation Agreement, or the Dutch treaty. Also included are the 1778 Treaty of Amity and Commerce with France, the Treaty of Alliance with France, and the Provisional Articles of Peace signed by the United States and Great Britain in November 1782, whichâ"with only minor revisionsâ"became the definitive peace treaty the following year. The volume further features one of the earliest English printings of the important 1782 treaty between the United States and the Dutch Republic, the first concluded with a nation other than France, as well as the final Petition of Congress to the King, delivered in London by Richard Penn. Jackson, 1737-1795, originally secretary to the bigamous Duchess of Kingston, was involved in laying a false charge of sodomy against the actor Samuel Foote in 1775. He was a preacher, journalist, playwright and radical sympathiser, being involved in negotiations in France. As the trial went against him, at his sentencing he took poison, probably provided by his wife, and dropped dead in the dock. The treason charges, extending over 12 pages, accused Jackson of encouraging the King's enemies in France to invade Ireland.…
