First edition (per matching dates upon title and copyright pages). i-vi, 1-176 pages. Hardcover; H 19cm x L 12cm. Original dark brown cloth rubbed, stains to front board and spine, large but light discoloration to rear board, spine head bumped with short tears at top of joints, 3cm loss at spine heel with some gouging into the quires, light abrasion along board edges with corners bumped and nicked. Soiling and foxing to endpapers; pencil initials on front pastedown; faint moisture stains to bottom corners of initial leaves; a few page corners creased; occasionally mild foxing on interior leaves. Reverend Jackson was evidently a minister in Winchester, Virginia at the time the book was published for his Preface is dated from that small town in the Blue Ridge mountains. OCLC attributes authorship to William Myers Jackson who died in 1855. This date corresponds to the death of a Reverend William Jackson who served as the minister at Norfolk, Virginia's prominent St. Paul's Church from 1849 to 1855 (upon his demise from yellow fever) but it would require further research to verify whether it is the same individual. Only a fair copy but apparently a rather uncommon book for OCLC cites only nine copies among member libraries.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book includes 300 promises from both the Old and New Testaments, with practical remarks and observations. Selected from across the whole Bible, they cover a wide range of topics, including blessings, safety, peace, and eternal joys of heaven. Each promise is treated on a separate page. The author's intention is to help the reader find a promise suited to their situation and to establish their faith, promote their comfort, and influence their practice. The author's premise is that faith is not blind, but an intelligent understanding and reasoned acceptance of the truth and fact of God's Word. Throughout, the author has availed themselves of other helps within their reach, while the Bible has been both their text-book and their test-book. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Rare second English edition, "the bestÂEnglishÂedition" (Howes), of the Constitutions of the thirteen newly independent American states, published only one year after the first English edition, with early printings of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and important U.S.-French treaties. Preceded by the 1781 American edition of only 200 copies and the 1782 first English edition, neither of which included the Declaration of Rights, the Petition to the King, the Non-Importation Agreement, or the Dutch treaty. Royal octavo, bound in one quarter contemporary calf over marbled boards, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt ruling to the spine in six compartments within raised bands. Without portrait ofÂWashington; ListÂofÂtheÂPresidentsÂofÂtheÂAmerican Congress, and 3 ppÂof ads at rear. Howes C-716; Sabin 16088. In very good condition. Scattered toning and some underlining and marginalia. Ownership name to the title page. AnÂimportant cornerstone of American constitutional history. This rare second English edition of The Constitutions of the Several Independent States of America contains early printings of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, as well as the Declaration of Rights (a forerunner to the Declaration) and the Non-Importation Agreement, Congressâs response to taxation without representation. Also included are the 1778 Treaty of Amity and Commerce with France, the Treaty of Alliance with France, and the Provisional Articles of Peace signed by the United States and Great Britain in November 1782, whichâ"with only minor revisionsâ"became the definitive peace treaty the following year. The volume further features one of the earliest English printings of the important 1782 treaty between the United States and the Dutch Republic, the first concluded with a nation other than France, as well as the final Petition of Congress to the King, delivered in London by Richard Penn. Shortly after publication of the earlier 1782 edition, The Monthly Review described the work as âthe book which may be considered the Magna Carta of the United American States.â.

(2), 142pp. Without half title. Disbound. ESTC T40316. Jackson, 1737-1795, originally secretary to the bigamous Duchess of Kingston, was involved in laying a false charge of sodomy against the actor Samuel Foote in 1775. He was a preacher, journalist, playwright and radical sympathiser, being involved in negotiations in France. As the trial went against him, at his sentencing he took poison, probably provided by his wife, and dropped dead in the dock. The treason charges, extending over 12 pages, accused Jackson of encouraging the King's enemies in France to invade Ireland.
