In this context, NRA stands for National Recovery Administration, a short lived program begun by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 in response to businesses engaging in harmful methods of competition. The stamp was a way to quickly communicate to consumers that your company was participating in this program. Though popular with workers, the NRA was declared to be unconstitutional in 1935 and ceased operations. *OCLC* locates three holdings.…

One of the memorable home-front songs of the Second World War, 'Bell Bottom Trousers' celebrates the romance and optimism surrounding the U.S. Navy during the height of the conflict. Written and composed by Moe Jaffe, the song tells the story of a young woman devoted to her sailor sweetheart, whose distinctive Navy uniform gives the song its enduring title. Although never as ubiquitous as 'Anchors Aweigh or 'Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree,' it became a recognizable wartime favorite and captures the patriotic spirit and popular culture of 1944 America. Equally noteworthy is the striking monochromatic cover illustration by Albert Wilfred Barbelle, depicting four sailors in animated stride against a stylized seaside backdrop. Barbelle was among the most prolific and respected commercial artists of the Tin Pan Alley era, producing thousands of sheet music covers over a career spanning more than four decades. Trained in Europe and later at New York's Art Students League, he became renowned for his elegant commercial illustrations and designed covers for publishers including Waterson, Berlin & Snyder and Santly-Joy. Today his work is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, and other major archives, and his original cover designs have become increasingly collectible in their own right. This example grades Very Good. The cover remains bright and attractive with strong navy-blue printing and excellent eye appeal. Moderate edge wear is present, including small chips at the upper left corner and minor perimeter rubbing, with light age toning consistent with wartime paper. The interior music pages are clean and complete with no writing or significant staining observed, and the center fold remains secure. Overall, this is a highly presentable original WWII-era example with an especially desirable Barbelle-designed cover.
