After the Normandy landings, over 25 major airborne operations were planned by the Allied high command and cancelled for one reason or another. Finally, on September 10th, 1944, Field Marshall Montgomery met with Dwight Eisenhower at Melsbroek airfield outside of Brussels. It would see counterattacks by the Germans at Mortain, and the closing of the Falaise pocket. It would include the liberation of Paris, and the German retreat across the Seine. At the end of August, the Commonwealth troops in the north would plan to move through the Low Countries, while the Americans attempted to push to the Rhine through Lorraine.
