Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Matthew Leishman, a minister in the Church of Scotland during a turbulent period in its history. The author, a descendant of Leishman, uses a mix of archival documents and personal recollections to paint a vivid portrait of his grandfather's life and ministry. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of the Scottish Disruption of 1843, a seismic event that saw the establishment of the Free Church of Scotland. Leishman was a key figure in this period, leading a faction known as the Middle Party, who sought a compromise between the established Church and those seeking greater independence. The book delves into the complex theological and political issues surrounding the Disruption, exploring the competing forces of evangelicalism and moderation within the Church of Scotland. It provides insights into the social and cultural context of early 19th century Scotland, highlighting the role of religious institutions in shaping public life. Beyond the specifics of the Disruption, this book offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and character of a prominent religious leader during a time of profound social and religious change. It reveals how a man of conviction and intelligence navigated a period of great upheaval, leaving a lasting impact on the religious landscape of Scotland.
