This is one of a number of anonymous contributions in 1679 to the 'Exclusion Crisis' debate. The newly formed 'Country Party', soon to be called Whigs, suported the exclusion bills that sought to prevent the Duke of York, Charles II's brother, succeeding to the throne because he was a Catholic. Ashley Cooper, first Earl of Shaftesbury, led the exclusion campaign. The bills were not passed, James became King in 1685, but was deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688.…
