Original brown cloth, gilt lettering & decoration, top edge rough, others untrimmed, upper boards embossed in black with a pictorial design by Charles Ricketts. §The writer John Cowper Powys's copy with his inked name to front pastedown of each volume. Ink-crosses or marks in his hand drawing attention to four passages in 'The City of the Dreadful Night'. §Two of the three Powys brothers are known to have had an interest in Thomson. The novelist Louis Wilkinson reports that "in his undergraduate days [at Oxford]" he talked with T.F. Powys "of Nietzsche and Schopenhauer, of James Thomson . . . and Swinburne and other poets" but that "it was Nietzsche who then most attracted Theodore who bore a striking resemblance to one portrait of that destructive and creative philosopher" ('Some Memories of T.F. Powys', ed. Sewell, 1964, pp.10-11); Llewelyn Powys's collection 'Cup-Bearers of Wine and Hellebore', 1924, includes an 11 page essay on 'B.V.'; John Cowper Powys's interest in the 'pessimist poet', however, is perhaps unrecorded (a fairly tantalising pairing). Free endpapers browned, ownership signatures offset. Prelims., portraits & tissue-guards slightly foxed. A few leaves carelessly opened (see illustration of vol. I, p. 246, for the most serious example). Some marking to covers, Ricketts designs a little rubbed. Spines severely faded, obliterating gilt lettering & blocking, spine ends chafed & worn. 3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In stamped and postmarked envelope, addressed in the same hand to 'J. Y. [sic] Baron Esq. | 48, Griffin Street, | Tritton | Blackburn'. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, in slightly discoloured envelope. It is not known who acted as Marston's amanuensis after the death of his sister Cicely in 1878: the present letter is written in a neat and somewhat childish hand. It dates from what had been an extremely trying year for Marston, with Rossetti dying the previous April, and the dying James Thomson being carried from Marston's rooms two months later. Baron was a shameless autograph hunter, and in response to one of his stock requests Marston begins: 'Dear Sir, | I am sorry to have misunderstood your inquiry, as I see I have done. My two books are published by Chatto & Windus of Piccadilly, where I have no doubt they can be procured'. He would be glad to send Baron a photograph, but he has none. 'I was last taken six years ago, & had only a few copies made', an engraving from one of them appearing in 'Harper's Magazine' in May of the same year, in an article entitled 'some London Poets', 'but in case you should come across it I may say that it does not please my friends'. He concludes with thanks for Baron's 'warm wishes'.…
