This book provides for the first time a complete history of the doctrine of the transcendentals, from its beginning in the 'Summa de bono' of Philip the Chancellor (ca. 1225) up to its most extensive systematic account in the 'Metaphysical Disputations' of Francisco Suárez (1597). The book also shows the importance of the doctrine for the understanding of philosophy in the Middle Ages. Metaphysics is called 'First Philosophy', not because it deals with the first, divine being, but because it treats that which is first in a cognitive sense, the transcendental concepts of 'being', 'one', 'true' and 'good'.Winner of the Journal of the History of Philosophy Book Prize competition for the best book in the history of western philosophy published in 2013.

Bij elk van haar kinderen dat stierf, herinnert ze zich nog de kleur van het licht dat door het raam op het westen viel op het moment dat de dood binnensloop, steevast op kousenvoeten door de achterdeur. Kempenaar en voormalig hoofd van Vredeseilanden Jan Aertsen besloot na de dood van zijn vader in 2014 om zoveel mogelijk verhalen uit het leven van zijn pionierende boerenfamilie van de vergetelheid te redden. Hij sprak met getuigen en achterblijvers, las historische werken, wroette in archieven en in zijn eigen geheugen. Samen vormen deze puzzelstukken een bont familieportret van durvers en doeners, van dromers en piekeraars. Maar het boek werd meer, het werd een beeld van Vlaanderen in de uitgerekte 20ste eeuw, van zijn boeren en notarissen, zijn oorlogen en zijn kerken, zijn burgemeesters en zijn kleine mensen. En op het einde bleek dat er heel veel werd doodgegaan in al die verhalen, te veel soms.Met behulp van zijn heel eigen levendige stijl, die moeiteloos van bruut naar teder schakelt, maakte de auteur van de feiten en verhalen een familiesaga, geschreven met liefde voor de geportretteerden, liefde ook voor een dorp in een voorbije tijd, maar zonder enig vals sentiment. Wie eerlijk schrijft mag niemand ontzien, ook zichzelve niet. 'Ik ben een zondagskind, op de wereld gezet op woensdag 14 september 1950. Als vierde jongen van acht kinderen dobberde ik rustig door mijn kindertijd. Eens zelf vader en grootvader, werd ik bij grote emotionele gebeurtenissen teruggegooid naar vroeger en naar mezelf: Jan van Fons van Kees van Sus van Geertjes. Ik stond in steile bewondering voor mijn vader, een pionierende boer, en voor die andere durvers in de landbouw. Wie waren die avonturiers die mij voorafgingen? Ik ging zoeken naar de geschiedenis van die ondernemende mannen en hun nog straffere vrouwen. En dat zoeken werd dit boek, het verhaal van een boerengeslacht, maar net zo goed het verhaal van zoveel families in Vlaanderen en Nederland waarin de boerderij generaties lang de spil van het bestaan vormde.' 't Is ook maar doodgaan is een bundeling van verhalen die samen een zo getrouw mogelijk familieportret en tijdsbeeld vormen, met liefde geschreven, maar zonder blad voor de mond.
