The book is an outcome of the deliberations held during the two day Seminar on Central and Western Himalayas organized on 25 and 26 November 2002 at Anthropological Survey of India North West Regional Centre Dehradun in the International year of mountains. Out of 25 papers presented in the seminar 16 papers were selected for the present book from the fields of physical anthropology cultural anthropology sociology and linguistics with the hope to not only have better understanding of the uniqueness and the variations in terms of biological and socio cultural aspects of the Himalayan societies located in the central and western parts of the Himalayas but would also provide some useful insights on the pressing problems of the Himalayan people which would be of practical relevance to the administrators planners and other welfare agencies.
