Bald darauf wurde Topologie zu einem gängigen Begriff. Listing war nach Studien der Mathematik und Architektur in Göttingen durch seinen… Lehrer Carl Friedrich Gauß dazu angeregt worden sich mit diesem Gebiet zu befassen, das damals noch 'Analysis situs' genannt wurde.Neben der Mathematik beschäftigte sich Listing auch eingehend mit dem Erdmagnetismus, der Geologie und der physiologischen Optik. Seine beiden Bücher 'Über unsere jetzige Kenntniss der Gestalt und Grösse der Erde' (1872) und 'Neue geometrische und dynamische Constanten des Erdkörpers' (1878) sind hier zu einem Band zusammen gefügt.
