April 1821 in Wien), war ein deutscher Arzt und gilt als Begründer der öffentlichen Hygiene und eines sozialmedizinisch geprägten Gesundheitsdienstes. Johann Peter Frank war das jüngste von dreizehn Kindern eines Gemischtwarenhändlers. Zur Schule ging er in Eußerthal, Rastatt und im lothringischen Bockenheim.[1] Er studierte 1761 Philosophie in Metz, entschied sich aber 1763 dazu, Medizin in Heidelberg und Straßburg zu studieren. Er promovierte 1766 zum Doktor der Medizin in Heidelberg. Nach einer Tätigkeit als Landarzt in Rodalben,Bitsch, Zaisenhausen und Bruchsal wurde Frank Leibarzt des Fürstbischofs von Speyer. Später wurde ihm von diesem die Leitung einer Anstalt in Deidesheim und eines Spitals in Bruchsal übertragen, wo er eine Chriurgenschule errichtete. 1767 heiratete er, seine Frau Katharine starb am Kindbettfieber, der Sohn ein halbes Jahr danach. 1770 heiratete er Marianne Wittlinsbach, die ihm einen Sohn gebar. 1779 veröffentlicht Frank den ersten von sechs Bänden seines Hauptwerkes System einer vollständigen medicinischen Polizey". Nachdem Frank 1784 eine Professur in Göttingen antrat, wurde er 1785 Professor in Pavia und Generaldirektor des Medizinalwesens in der österreichischen Lombardei. Als Professor am Wiener Allgemeinen Krankenhaus beginnt Frank ab 1795 mit der grundlegenden Modernisierung des Institutes. 1804 wird er mit seinem Sohn Josef Frank an die Kaiserliche Universität Vilnius berufen, wo er ebenfalls moderne Strukturen und Lehrpläne einführt. 1807 bis 1808 schließlich wird Frank Leibarzt des russischen Zaren Alexander I. am Hof in Sankt Petersburg. Frank stirbt 1821 in Wien an den Folgen eines Schlaganfalls und ruht in einem Ehrengrab auf dem Wiener Zentralfriedhof (Gruppe 32 A, Nummer 3). Johann Peter Frank gilt als Pionier auf dem Gebiet der Sozialmedizin sowie des Öffentlichen Gesundheitsdienstes und einer der Begründer des Faches Hygiene als universitäres Fach. Die sechsbändige Veröffentlichung System einer vollständigen medicinischen Polizey" ist sein Hauptwerk. Sein Eintreten für eine bessere Ausbildung von Ärzten, Schwestern und Hebammen, einer besseren Finanzierung des Gesundheitswesens, sowie sein Eintreten für ein verpflichtendes Medizinstudium der Wiener Chirurgen machten aus Frank einen als unbequem geltenden Zeitgenossen. Frank trat für eine grundlegende Verbesserung der Hygiene in öffentlichen Gebäuden, mehr Licht in Krankensälen, Grünanlagen in Städten, Sport und Gymnastik in Schulen und Pausen in den Arbeitszeiten ein. Er scheute sich auch nicht, dies den Herrschern, für die er tätig war, deutlich zu machen. Alexander von Humboldt sagte über ihn: (Ich) gestehe, daß selten ein Mann solchen Eindruck auf mich gemacht hat." (Wikipedia) "Strack: Karl St., Arzt, geboren in Mainz am 17. Februar 1722 und in Aschaffenburg als kurfürstlicher Hof- und Regierungsrath am 10. October [486] 1805 verstorben, studirte außer in seiner Vaterstadt noch in Paris, Berlin und Erfurt. Am letztgenannten Orte promovirte er 1747 mit der Abhandlung: De mechanismo, effectu, usu respirationis sanae", ließ sich darauf in Mainz als Arzt nieder, wurde 1754 Professor der Chirurgie, 1763 der Physiologie und Pathologie, 1782 der Chemie, erhielt 1784 den obengenannten Titel und siedelte bei Verlegung der Mainzer Universität nach Aschaffenburg hierher über, wo er bis an sein Lebensende verblieb. St. war auch schriftstellerisch in hervorragendem Maaße thätig. Zahlreiche Dissertationen, akademische Gelegenheitsreden, größere und kleinere, selbständige und Journalabhandlungen rühren von ihm her, deren Verzeichniß sich in dem untengenannten Buche, bezw. den dort angegebenen Quellen findet.
