CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers lightly faded on spine and cover, minor. soiling. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Wyeth's memoir of Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest is a valuable and unusually interesting account. Written in an engaging style, his narrative is full and clear. John Allan Wyeth was born on May 26, 1845, in Guntersville, Alabama. He attended La Grange Military Academy, a defunct military academy in Colbert County, Alabama, from the age of 15 to 17. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate States Army. He participated in Morgan's Raid and rode under Brigadier-General John Hunt Morgan, from 1862 to 1863. He joined the 4th Regiment Alabama Cavalry under General Joseph Wheeler and served in the Battle of Chickamauga of 1863. He was captured by Union forces and jailed at Camp Morton in Indianapolis. He was incarcerated for a total of 16 months. In February 1865 he was part of a prisoner exchange and returned to Confederate agents in Virginia. REFERENCE: DORN II 2738; NEVINS II pg. 103: "Written by a Confederate veteran who served under Forrest, this detailed and uncritical study is concerned almost entirely with military operations." EICHER #220: "Wyeth provides one of the more interesting turn-of-the-century works of Confederate biography. The author's wartime experience as a young trooper of the 4th Alabama Cavalry invents this work with its strengths and weaknesses. Despite Wyeth's hero worship, the work contains much of value. For instance, the author establishes a logical argument supporting the contention that Forrest was perhaps the only Confederate commander thinking clearly at Fort Donelson.".
