In December 1890 at Wounded Knee on the Pine Creek Reservation the US Seventh Cavalry opened fire on a Sioux Indian village. Wounded Knee has been written about the photographs of the battlefield have received little attention. This book brings together some 150 photographs that were made before and immediately after the massacre. Two photographers, George Trager and Clarence Morelodge have never had their work published. Accompanying commentaries focus on both the Indian and military sides of the story. Richard Jensen analyzes the political and economic quagmire in which the Sioux found themselves after 1877. Eli Paul considers the army's role at Wounded Knee. John Carter discusses the photographers, the reporters, and the relic hunters who were scouring the battlefield. A clean very presentable copy.
