Quoting from the flap of the dust jacket: "We know of no American who has gone so deeply into India and the life of its people as has the author of this book. He got out of the cities and off the beaten paths as fast and as often as he could. Sometimes alone, sometimes in a caravan, he traveled on foot or horseback, by boat, in a bullock cart, or riding pillion on a camel. But what he writes is not a book of travel.
