In 1404 he was made Secretary of War and in 1710 he became norther secretary of state. He was dismissed by George I. and the failure of the Jacobit rebellion (upon which he had pinned his hopes) left him with few allies and fewer friends. He fled to France and the British government seized his property and deprived him of his civil liberties. He was pardoned in 1723 and returned to England in 1725. He continued his opposition to the Whigs by contributing to the press within the literary circle that included Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pole, and John Gay, writing on English history and politics. First edition, complete with half title. With a portrait frontispiece. An interesting collection of letters from this controversial figure of the eighteenth century. Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, was an English politician, government official and political philosopher. He was a leader of the Tories, and supported the Church of England politically despite his antireligious views and opposition to theology. Containing a letter to Sir William Windham, a British Whig politician, written in the year 1717; Some Reflections on the Present State of the Nation, Principally with Regard to her Taxes and Debts and on the Causes and Consequences of Them; and a letter addressed to Alexander Pope, Esq, an English poet, translator, and satirist of the Enlightenment era. His letter to Sir William Wyndham, was written during his exile in explanation of his position. It is generally considered one of his finest compositions, but was not published until after his death. Bound in full modern cloth. Externally, very smart with minor wear and the odd small mark to the boards. Library stickers to the tail of the spine and rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with scattered spotting throughout. Age toning to the extremities. Contemporary ink inscriptions to the title page and reverse of the half title. Bolingbroke's epistolary study is considered the first to examine the impact of the past on current events (to put it simply). Among those affected by these letters was Voltaire along with the young Lord Cornbury, later Lord Hyde. In very good condition, there is a bookplate of the last owner covering the name of the owner before that. There is also a place where someone has written a response to the text in ink and has written a brief biographical note on Bolingbroke. These seem to be limited to the the first and second letter and are dated 1956. A notation is on the back board on the inside, there is a bit of leather missing on back outside and a minor split on the front near the bottom of the spine. Good Condition: 8vo, leather binding, some foxing and damp. Bookplate on front board, writing on back board. Marginalia. Age appropriate page discoloration. "Letters on the Study and Use of History."
