Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. SUBTITLED: Comprising a Series of Discourses Delivered Before the Historical Society of Michigan, and Other Interesting Papers Relative to the Territory. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 12mo. 215 pp. Orig. cloth, printed paper label. Complete as published. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light rubbing to cov…ers, minor wear to edges. Spine label rubbed but complete and readable. Spine lightly age-faded. Interior pages are age-toned with scattered foxing. Overall, near fine for a 190 year-old book; quite remarkable to find a copy in this condition. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Very early Detroit, Michigan imprint. The book is a collection of historical sketches relating to the early settlement of Michigan by leading authorities. This work prints the text of four annual discourses delivered before the Historical Society of Michigan, by Lewis Cass, Henry Whiting, John Biddle, and Henry Schoolcraft. Lewis Cass' remarks consist of general observations on the early condition of North American Indians in the region, the French expedition to the sources of the Mississippi, Pontiac's attack at Detroit, Indian hostilities, events during the Revolution, etc. Henry Schoolcraft's discourse consists of an account of the Iroquois, Algonquin, Chippewa, Ottawa, Foxes, etc., with some discussion of their relations with the French. Also includes extracts from a lecture given before the Detroit Lyceum by Schoolcraft upon the natural history of Michigan. The Whiting and Biddle papers add further material relating to Indian hostilities, the War of 1812, the early political division of Michigan, mining, public lands disposal, etc. A great group of papers on early Michigan history, now quite scarce; a very early Michigan imprint not often offered for sale in such nice, original condition.
