John Thaw (1942-2002), BAFTA, best TV actor, for Inspector Morse (1990 and 1993). A typed letter, July 2001, shortly after he had been diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus. 'I have been tremendously touched by the number of people who have taken the trouble to write to me and I take great strength from the obvious concern and affection that has been expressed.'
