Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Dust Jacket. New and Improved Edition. pp. 454, 164 + index [6], +[1] + Directions to the Binder [1]; 11 leaves of plates. The title to the first work continues ."Shewing their power and influence on the affairs of mankind, with several extracts and original pices from the writings of the best authors. The whole designed to prevent infidelity, shew the states of separate spirits, and Evince the certainty of the World to Come. A new and improved edition." The first work is not dated but the second work is dated 1823, but both works were printed by J. Gleave, the second work also published by Gleave. It would appear that these two works were designed to be bound together. The directions to the Binder lists 12 plates, but only 11 are bound here - there is no evidence of a 12th ever having been bound in, with no associated browning to neighbouring pages at the point it should have been bound in. Other copies we have located have also only had 11 plates. The binding whilst contemporary is poor; the front board is missing and the leather to the spine is chipped and loose, the first couple of pages detached. It is in need of rebinding. The contents are good and complete, but some pages are well thumbed and it would appear to be a well-read copy; occasional scattered foxing more or less throughout, more pronounced to some pages; a couple of plates worn along the plate mark, one with loss to the fore-edge margin, but no affecting printed part. A few pages also chipped/torn to margins but not affecting text. A good copy in need of rebinding. Size: 8vo. Book.…

Leather. Zustand: Good. A smart improved edition of publisher John Tregortha's very scarce collection of writings on ghosts, apparitions, and the supernatural, intended to prove to the reader the existence of the afterlife. A 'new and improved edition' of this very scarce work, which was first published in 1806.Illustrated with a frontispiece and one further engraved plate. Collated, complete.A fascinating work on ghosts and apparitions, 'shewing their power and influence on the affairs of mankind, with several extracts and original pieces from the writings of the best authors [.] designed to prevent infidelity, shew the states of separate spirits, and evince the certainty of the world to come'.Tregortha gathers existing writings on the supernatural and presents them as evidence of the afterlife, and thus as a reason to remain devout in faith.Inscription of H J Westmorland to front free endpaper.Rebacked, with original back strip laid down, retaining original endpapers.Undated, dated circa 1817 via WorldCat.Published in the civil parish of Burslem, Stoke on Trent, in the early 19th century by the author, a major figure in the book trade of the region, and provided printing and binding services. He printed about eighty-one books and pamphlets, many of a religious nature between 1796 and his death in 1821. Rebacked, in a full calf binding with original back strip laid down, retaining original endpapers. Externally, excellent. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound.
