Hardbound. Zustand: Very Good. Octavo, green cloth with gold lettering, x, 122 pp., bibliography, Index of References, Index of Authors Journal for the Study of the Old Testament Supplement Series 399. "This study focuses on a reading of Proverbs 1-9 as satire and argues that it alludes to two points of critique against Solomon: his political policy of socio-economic injustice and his numerous sexual (in)discretions. That Solomon abandoned his divinely proscribed duty only evinces his lack of "fear of Yahweh." First, Solomon demonstrates his lack of discernment by an inability to rule with righteousness, justice and equity because of administrative policies that bled the innocent dry of their resources for his own self-aggrandizement. Second, Solomon's sexual behavior reflects his need of Wisdom as the personification of eroticism. The absence of the "fear of Yahweh" in Solomon prompts the poet's reproof in Proverbs 1-9 that he should resume his proper role of Torah meditation. The signs of this satiric poetry intimate the wise king as a royal fool." publishers web copy.…

Paperback. Zustand: New. Persia had Rostam. Babylonia had Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Egypt had Horus and Isis. Greece had Odysseus and Achilles. Israel had its heroes, too--Moses, David, Esther and Samson. While Israel's heroes did not wear capes or spandex, they did meet cultural needs. In times of crisis, heroes emerge to model virtues that inspire a sense of commitment and worth. Identity concerns were especially acute for a post-exilic Jewish culture. Using modern American superheroes and their stories in a cross-cultural discussion, this book presents the stories of Israelite characters as heroes filling a cultural need.…

By using modern American superheroes and their stories as cross-cultural conversation partners, this book uniquely presents the stories of select Israelite characters as hero stories (beyond that as models of faith) while discerning those needs such (super)hero figures would have satisfied for a post-exilic Jewish culture.
