Part II describes the posts and offices and names the ministers who filled them, with some circumstances of the association. Much of this is not new material, though it is hoped that it will be convenient to have it all in one place. But the treatment of parish ministry over the period of the Civil War and Interregnum is, I believe, new and needed. What with ejections, sequestrations, and intrusions, not to mention the neglect or destruction of records, any historian may struggle to pin a named minister to his living, or find who was ministering at a given parish. Thus Latimer and Lyon Turner describe Matthew Hassard as having been at St Mary Redcliffe in 1639 while Sacks has him as minister of St Philip's; a position filled until 1650, according to Mortimer (following Wood), by Thomas Speed; and all of them are wrong. About the book >.>.> First, though Bristol was clearly the second trading port of England in the later seventeenth century and its merchants were the dominating group, this is the only Bristol merchant's ledger of the period known to survive. There is no other source which gives such a detailed picture of a Bristol merchant's trading at this time. It is especially valuable because Speed was engaged both in the old trade with Southern Europe and the new with the Americas. More fundamentally, the ledger also supplies an insight into the rationale and ethos of overseas trading. Moreover, the detailed picture which it affords over nine years can be fitted into an outline of Speed's trade over forty years. In fact, Speed is by far the most fully documented of all the merchants and of all the Quaker leaders in the city where both so flourished in the second half of the seventeenth century. The historical significance of his ledger thus parallels that of John Smythe, another man of consequence, over a century earlier (Bristol Record Society vol. XXVIII 1974). Bristol, with a cathedral, seventeen parishes, six gathered churches and two Quaker meetings, was heavily involved in this struggle. It was a confusing period and one of the aims of this volume is to sort out, for the first time, just who was ministering where and when; placing and documenting some 150 names. But the other aim is to show, by excerpt, something of the content of religious ministry over this century.
