Leaves uniformly age-toned but very clean throughout, the portraits with a touch of foxing, the folding map very nice. Juan Nepomuceno del Valle was a printer, author, editor, and government official who worked in Puebla and later in Mexico City. His El viajero en M xico: completa gu a de forasteros para 1864 (Mexico City: Andrade y Escalante, 1864), an expanded successor to his 1859 guide, is an unusually comprehensive directory and statistical portrait of the capital, recording its government, institutions, professions, trades, schools, businesses, accommodations, and public services; dedicated to Maximilian I, it was intended for visitors but also a practical gazetteer for the administration of the newly established Empire. The present example is in particularly nice condition bound in a period Mexican binding and retains the large folding lithographed plan of Mexico City, which is often lacking: Plano general de la Ciudad de M xico, dated 1864: a detailed street plan with indexed public buildings, the division of the city into wards and manzanas. This map is by the French-born Mexico City lithographer, printer, and publisher Jos Decaen (Joseph Antoine Decaen; died 1866).In addition to the standard information on government offices and officials, the present guide includes sections on the Guadalupe shrine (Villa de Guadalupe), as well as a description of the Castillo de Chapultepec and a brief section on the Academia Imperial de San Carlos (Art Academy), with a listing its professors and staff.In the business listings, one can find an extensive listing of pulquerias (230-241), a notable contrast with the handful of brewers listed. There is also a brief list of photographers (p. 207), as well as an impressive assortment of artisans and tradesman, including artists, portrait painters, landscape painters, lithographers, bookbinders, even gold leaf makers (batihojer as).RarityRare in the market, especially with the folding map present. We find only a single complete example with the map confirmed present in RBH. Book.
