Sophie von La Roche, a novelist, was the first German woman to make a profession through her published works, She was friends and acquaintances with many renowned writers or her day, including Christoph Martin Wieland (to whom she was once briefly engaged, and who later was to publish her first novel), and Göethe, among others; she was one of the most famous German women in that time. "The History of Lady Sophia Sternheim", her first novel, which was published in 1771, had great success and was quite influential on the romantic writers of the time. In fact this novel was an influence on Göethe, and it could be said that "The Sorrows of Young Werther" (published in 1774) was directly inspired by Sophie von La Roche's novel. Incidentally, she hosted a popular literary salon in her home. From the jacket write-up : |> This novel is Sophie von La Roche's best-known novel. It is also the first novel by a German woman to appear in print. A psychologically intense drama of the struggle of a young country woman to live virtuously in the face of the malevolent intrigues of family, friends, and lovers, it became an icon for young writers of the 'sturm und drang' generation of the late eighteenth century. Schiller and Herder admired it and Goethe wrote "The Sorrows of Young Werther" under its influence. With its message of the triumph of truth and virtue over self-love, this book stands as one of the great works of the Age of Sentiment.<| SERIES : NYU Press Women's Classics TITLE : The History of Lady Sophia Sternheim (Originally published in 1771 as "Geschichte des Fräuleins von Sternheim") AUTHOR : Sophie von La Roche (Sophie von La Roche, nee Gutermann von Gutershofen - 1731 - 1807) TRANSLATOR : Joseph Collyer (d. 1776) EDITOR / INTRODUCTION / CHRONOLOGY, etc : James Lynn IMPRINT : New York University Press (NYU Press) [ Printed by Billing & Sons in London] PLACE : New York DATE : (1992) EDITION : First NYU Press Printing -- First American Edition STATUS : Out of Print - OP (the State University of New York has a different translation available) DETAILS : Trade hardcover; contains an Introduction (which presents a fairly detailed biography, and a Chronology, Notes, and a brief Bibliography; xxxiv +216 pages; 5 3/8" x 8 3/8'; dark green paper-covered boards and spine, with silver-gilt lettering on spine; pictorial dust-jacket.
