Wie erklärt sich diese Popularität: Wohl aus der Frische und Unmittelbarkeit der Kramschen Verse, die in der Mundart seiner Heimat Erlebnisse fränkischer Landleute in der »Schtodt«, Erinnerungen an Krams Studienzeit in Würzburg und »as Menschalam« in ernsten und heiteren Betrachtungen schildern. Joseph Kram erhob für seine Mundartgedichte keinen hohen literarischen Anspruch. Er verfaßte sie, um sie gelegentlich im Freundeskreis vorzutragen; zur Veröffentlichung mußte man ihn drängen. Diesem Umstand verdanken wir die Erhaltung dieser Stücke: Seine unveröffentlichten Manuskripte hat Kram vor seinem Tod allesamt vernichtet.
