Explanation of the plates (vii-xii). 48 plates [counting pl. XLIV bis. as separate plate] (46 leaves).Francois (Francis) Garnier (1839 ?1873) was a French officer, inspector of Indigenous Affairs of Cochinchina and explorer. He eventually became mission leader of the Mekong Exploration Commission in 19th century Southeast Asia. The publication of this travelogue was limited to 300 copies. ?The first volume, written by Garnier, is a travelogue of the harrowing journey through Southeast Asia. Although this official account was heavily censored by the French Naval Ministry, a more complete version of this text had previously been published in instalments in the journal Le tour du monde. Garnier presents an adventure where the expedition leader died, its members were rifled with disease and ultimately made a long journey barefoot due to the total disintegration of the expeditioners? shoes. A description of the expedition?s detour to the temple complex of Angkor Wat did much to propagate the image of Angkor in Europe. The hundreds of woodcuts after drawings made by Louis Delaporte illustrate the monuments, landscapes, and people of Indochina. A second volume presents the scientific findings of the expedition and contains contributions on topics such as meteorology, geology, mineralogy, anthropology, and botany. The large-scale atlas volume contains numerous maps and lithographs of the most spectacular of Delaporte?s drawings, including some in colour.?, A near fine example of this rare complete but composite set of the first edition of Garnier?s travelogue and scientific study of Indochina, undertaken in the years 1866-1869 with the intention to inspect the navigability of the Mekong River. 3 volumes, including the atlas. 125 plates: vol I with 49 pages of plates; vol II with 6; atlas with 70 (plate XLIV bis. counted as separate from plate XLIV). In addition to over 150 in-text illustrations and vignettes. Some plates double-page, folding-out, or printed multiple to a page. Including maps, plans, aerial views, scenes, and other illustrations of the sights, landscape, and people of Indochina. Numerous plates with beautiful chromolithography, tinted lithography, and chromoxylographed maps. Coloured plates with protective tissue guards. Plates are clean and crisp. Titles in red and black. Vol. I title with blue ink stamp of foreign affairs office of (presumed) France (?Ministre des Affaires Etrangeres Archives?)., References : [6], VII, 580; [6], 523 pp. Cordier, Indosinica, cols. 1012-1013; Cordier, Sinica, cols. 329-330; Gomane, L?exploration du Mekong; Satow 147. Small repair to fore edge of frontis in vol I, not affecting print. Table of plates and table of contents at back both repaired, slight loss to text. Vol II. mispag. 162-7, text continuous. …
