[1848-1912]. L'ouvrage relate ses recherches auprès de la médium se faisant appeler Eva Carrière [née Marthe Béraud, 1886-1943]. Selon Ruth Brandon, dans son livre « Les Spiritualistes », Carrière et Juliette Alexandre-Bisson entretenaient une relation amoureuse. Carrière avait vingt-huit ans de moins que Bisson et n'avait que 19 ans lorsqu'elles organisèrent une série de séances à la Villa Carmen à Alger. Ces séances semblent avoir été mises en scène pour exciter les participants masculins, impliquant des examens intimes préalables de Carrière par Bisson afin de prouver l'absence d'« ectoplasme ». Carrière apparaissait souvent nue durant les séances. Les photographies du livre ont été prises par Bisson et, bien qu'elles paraissent être de grossières contrefaçons, nombre de participants furent dupés ou étouffèrent leurs doutes. Dans son livre, Brandon soutient que cette atmosphère érotique était orchestrée pour exacerber les réactions émotionnelles des participants masculins. Rien dans l'Avant-Propos ne suggère que ces femmes expérimentaient pour démontrer la crédulité (principalement masculine), mais le livre de Bisson doit assurément être lu aujourd'hui comme le récit précis de ce qui s'est passé. D'une certaine manière, les séances qu'elles organisaient ensemble étaient une sorte de performance artistique semi-pornographique, une farce magistrale jouée avec un sérieux imperturbable. Un ouvrage exceptionnellement rare, qui relate moins des phénomènes paranormaux qu'une entreprise frauduleuse perpétrée par deux femmes. La différence d'âge, Bisson étant bien plus âgée que la jeune Carrière, pourrait laisser penser que la plus âgée était la partenaire dominante, mais la supercherie n'aurait pas fonctionné si Carrière n'avait pas exercé un pouvoir sexuel sur les deux sexes. Un exemplaire de ce livre a figuré, à une époque, dans la bibliothèque de W.B. Yeats. Sur la page de garde se trouve l'ex-libris d'Alan Gauld [1932-2024], auteur d'ouvrages sur la parapsychologie.
