Der alte Meister Gottlieb hatte in seinem Leben schon so viele Tische, Stühle, Schränke, Laden, Kommoden, Bettstellen gemacht, dass man das ganze Schloß des Kaisers damit hätte vollstellen können. Er hatte… sein Tagewerk getan, saß vor seiner Werkstatt und rauchte seine Pfeife. Da klopfte es an die Tür. Ein kleines Männchen trat herein; es hatte einen langen weißen Bart. und hellblaue Augen. Das Männchen lachte gar wunderlich und sprach: »Sieh mal, was ich da aus meinem Wald mitgebracht habe, Meister Gottlieb!« »Was sollst du denn schon haben«, sagte der Meister, »ein Scheit Holz hast du in der Hand. was willst du damit?« »Aus dem sollst du mir ein Tischbein machen, aber ich glaube, du kannst es nicht«, erwiderte das Männchen. »Was? Ich soll aus so einem Stück Tannenholz nicht einmal ein Tischbein machen können? Als ob es das erste Tischbein wäre, das bei mir bestellt wird! Das wäre ja noch schöner! Zeig mal her!« Das Männchen gab ihm das Stück Holz mit einem verschmitzten Lächeln. Meister Gottlieb betrachtete es aufmerksam. Es war nur ein armdickes Stück Tannenholz- so groß wie Junge von fünf Jahren. Wo es oben und unten angesägt war, quoll gelbes Harz heraus. das roch frisch und stark, ganz wie im Wald. Rundherum saß feste braune Rinde. »Aus dem Stück kann selbst ein Lehrjunge ein Tischbein machen«, murmelte der Meister unwillig. »Na, na«, sagte das Männchen, »wenn du dich nur nicht irrst!« Da wurde Meister Pflaume aber wild und rief: »Potz Hobel und Sägespän'! In einer Viertelstunde ist das Tischbein fertig, und wenn's gleich schon Feierabend ist. Du kannst darauf warten.« Aber das Männchen zog seine langen grauen Brauen hoch, zwinkerte dann mit den Augen, wackelte mit seinem großen Kopf hin und her und sprach: »So viel Zeit habe ich nicht, Meister Pflaume! Ich muss heute abend noch in den Wald zurück. Meine Kinder erwarten mich. Das da heißt Zäpfel Kern.« In deutscher Sprache. 158 pages.
