Boston: Stoke Moran for The Speckled Band, 1947. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, ONE OF 300 NUMBERED COPIES, this copy No. 125. Octavo (8vo). [12], 13-93, [1] pp. Original gray pebbled printed wrappers, stapled, with an illustrated front wrapper depicting a horse cab and driver. Privately printed for the Sherlockian society "The Speckled Band," the Boston Chapter of the Baker Street Irregulars, of which the author belonged. This collection contains fifteen essays, a sonnet, and a quiz concerning Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes canon, with contributions by James Keddie, Sr., Edgar W. Smith, Helen Yuhasova, Herbert F. West, Henry C. Clark, P. M. Stone, and others. With a foreword by Vincent Starrett, it is one of the scarcer postwar Sherlockian publications and an important work for collectors of Doyle and Sherlock Holmes scholarship. Recognized in John Bennett Shaw's Basic Holmesian Library ("The Shaw One Hundred") as one of the essential works of Sherlockian scholarship. Provenance: From the Sherlock Holmes collection of Laurence P. Dodge, assembled beginning in the early 1930s and acquired directly from Dodge descendants. Part of a long-held Sherlockian library containing early Doyle editions and classic works of Holmes scholarship. Contents clean and unmarked. Binding remains sound. Wrappers with light soiling and sunning, primarily along the edges and spine. A well-preserved Very Good copy. References: Shaw, The Basic Holmesian Library ("The Shaw One Hundred"); De Waal C5948.
