Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. A collection of Twain short articles and stories ("The Jumping Frog of Calaveras County"), with illustrations by his contemporary, Kemble. (Kemble's late 1800's caricatures of African Americans are today considered racist, but this volume contains few, if any such.) Spine wrinkles, staining to front cover. Some light water damage to first few pages. Despite this damage, very tight in boards.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. E. W. Kemble (illustrator). 2nd Edition. Colonel Carter of Cartersville by F. Hopkinson Smith 1891 Humorous Dialect Novel of Virginia. 1891 Second Edition, Published by Houghton Mifflin. Illustrated by the Author and E. W. Kemble. Deaccessioned from the long-Defunct from the American Merchant Marine Library Association. X-LIB. F. Hopkinson Smith was a man of multiple talents. One of those talents was the penning of genial novels and travel books. Being an artist of no mean talent, he often illustrated his own books, which is the case with this novel, "Colonel Carter of Cartersville", which was illustrated by Smith, himself, and the well-known illustrator, E. W. Kemble. "Colonel Carter of Cartersville" is a novel in dialect - southern dialect, including that of the various black characters that inhabit the story. It is a genial story, and was considered to reflect a certain truth about Southern life and culture. the book was very popular in its day. Among F. Hopkinson Smith's other talents was that of a highly esteemed engineer. The most famous government construction contract for Smith was the foundation for the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. TITLE : Colonel Carter of Cartersville AUTHOR : F. Hopkinson Smith (Francis Hopkinson Smith, 1838 - 1915) ILLUSTRATIONS : F. Hopkinson Smith and E. W. Kemble IMPRINT : Houghton Mifflin Company PLACE : Boston DATE : (1891) EDITION : Second Printing, with the change of cover materials, title spelling on spine, and illustration placement PROVENANCE : X-Library : Long deaccessioned from the American Merchant Marine Library Association (and with multiple instances of their stamp). I find the provenance of this book interesting, being a record of a long-defunct mariner's library. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Illustrated Trade hardcover; Contains numerous line illustrations; vi + 208 pages; approximately 4 3/4" x 7", quarter-bound cloth on cloth; top edge gilt. The binding is a slate blue cloth spine with boards of a light gray grained linen - title, etc. in gilt on spine, in dark gray on front board (with a gilt panel behind the C in 'Colonel') . This is the Edition of 1891, not a modern reprint. STATUS : OP - Out of Print CONDITION -- Good Plus -- Deaccessioned from a defunct library (American Merchant Marine Library) A used copy, deaccessioned from the Merchant Marine Library Association in New York, and with numerous placements of their stamp (including within the text) - in acceptable antiquarian condition, clean and serviceable with the following imperfections noted: BOARDS : Mild bumps to corner tips, else clean. SPINE : Moderate compression and abrasion to extremities - color of cloth is slightly darkened - title still displays strongly. BINDING : Solid as can be expected - the book has obviously been read and the pages open readily, the binding not being as tight as when issued - but no leaves are detached or loose - there is a just perceptible lean towards the front board. TEXT-BLOCK EDGES : Top edge rubbed, but still fairly bright, else toned but clean. END PAPERS : The library stamps and withdrawn stamp - toning and scattered small spotting. INTERIOR : Modest signs of use throughout - a few scattered small spots and smudges - a few page edge tears (due mainly to careless separating of bolts - but basically clean and presentable throughout. DUST JACKET : None present (Issued?) .

Very good.
