First edition. 2.Nc3 is White's second most common move responding to 1.e4 c5. Black's options are similar to those for 2.Nf3, the most common being .Nc6, along with .e6 and .d6, and less commonly .a6 and .g6. 2.e5 transposes into a variant of the Vienna Game. In all cases, White can then play 3.Nf3, as if White had played 2.Nf3 then 3.Nc3 (e.g. 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 (ECO code B30)). For the most part, other moves are the Closed Sicilian. Possible moves are 3.g3 and 3.f4 in general, also 3.Nge2, and less commonly 3.d3 and 3.Bc4. Many lines transpose to the Open Sicilian, the Moscow Variation, or the Rossolimo Variation, but there are many that do not. Also of some interest is 3.Bb5 to .Nc6. A typical line is 2.Nc6 3.g3 (ECO code B24). Also, 2.Nc6 3.f4 is the Closed Sicilian, Grand Prix Attack (part of B23). Condition: Edge wear with bumped corners, some soiling else about very good.

The CaroKann Defence is a chess opening characterised by the moves: 1. e4 c6 The CaroKann is a common defence against the King's Pawn Opening. It is classified as a Semi-Open Game, like the Sicilian Defence and French Defence, although it is thought to be more solid and less dynamic than either of those openings. It often leads to good endgames for Black, who has the better pawn structure. It allows Black to circumvent enormous bodies of theory in 1.e4 openings such as the Ruy Lopez and the Sicilian Defence. Unlike its sister opening, the French Defence, the CaroKann does not hinder the development of Black's light-squared bishop. However, it comes at the cost of a tempo because Black has to play 1.c6 before pushing the pawn to c5, whereas Black can push c7c5 in one move in the French Defence. White can combat the CaroKann in several different ways, often gaining a space advantage; additionally, Black has less mobility and can lag in development. Condition: Edge wear, soiled, rust stains at staples, soiled, corners bumped else better than good.

The Accelerated Dragon (or Accelerated Fianchetto) is a chess opening variation of the Sicilian Defence that begins with the moves: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6 The Accelerated Dragon features an early .g6 by Black. An important difference between this line and the Dragon is that Black avoids playing .d7 d6 so that .d7 d5 can be played later in one move, if possible. Black also avoids the Yugoslav Attack, but since White has not yet played Nc3, 5.c4 (the Maróczy Bind) is possible. Condition: Previous owner's name to front wrapper verso, light edge wear with gently bumped corners else very good.

The French Defence is a chess opening characterised by the moves: 1. e4 e6 This is most commonly followed by 2.d4 d5, with Black intending .c5 at a later stage, attacking White's pawn centre and gaining space on the queenside. The French has a reputation for solidity and resilience, although some lines such as the Winawer Variation can lead to sharp complications. Black's position is often somewhat cramped in the early game. In particular, the pawn on e6 can impede the development of the bishop on c8. Condition: Wrapper edges age toned, corners bumped, rubbed and creased else very good.

In chess, the SmithMorra Gambit (or simply Morra Gambit) is an opening gambit against the Sicilian Defence distinguished by the moves: 1. e4 c5 2. d4 cxd4 3. c3 White sacrifices a pawn to develop quickly and create attacking chances. In exchange for the gambit pawn, White has a piece developed after 4.Nxc3 and a pawn in the center, while Black has an extra pawn and a central pawn majority. The plan for White is straightforward and consists of placing his bishop on c4 to attack the f7-square, and controlling both the c- and d-files with rooks, taking advantage of the fact that Black can hardly find a suitable place to post his queen. Condition: light edge wear with bumped corners, lightly soiled else very good.

Trade Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Assumed First Edition. 219 Pages Indexed. The last of the blank Notes pages has some scribbling. No other marks of any kind. Throughout the history of the Dutch Defense, it has not been particularly popular. Used on occasion as a "must win" surprise weapon, it was thought to be positionally unsound and not worthy of a permanent place in the repertoire of a Grandmaster. The one player of note who disagreed with this view was World champion Botvinnik who scored many nice wins with the Stonewall Variation. However when he retired, it seemed that the Dutch Defense retired with him. Within the last six years though, a group of players in their continual search for a dynamic Black opening, started experimenting with various lines in the Dutch. These players (Agdestein, Malaniuk, Dolmatov, etc.) surprised everyone by scoring many nice wins. Naturally, other heads started turning towards the beacon of the Dutch. Today such superstars as Ps a k h i s, Yusupov, and Short use it regularly, and the Dutch is starting to gain a popularity and respectability that it has never before experienced. The reason for this popularity resides in the fact that it is not as well studied as some other openings, and that Black can immediately fight for the initiative rather than the usual dull plodding after equality that most openings offer. Though Black has tried to rehabilitate many different lines in the Dutch, it has finally been made clear that his best chances lie in the tactical complexities of the Leningrad Variation or the strategic difficulties of the Stonewall Defense. Both of these systems offer Black excellent practical chances, and should be where the student focuses his attention if he wishes to learn this promising opening for Black. A study of this book from the Black side should enable the student to turn this opening into a deadly weapon.
