White boards with gilt illustration on front cover, gilt spine lettering; white dust jacket, color illustration on front, bw illustration on rear, black lettering; top edge red tinted; color mounted frontispiece; 169 pp, 170 bw illustrations throughout. "many of the foxes are shown in the 170 photographs in this book. The text, in relating the illustrations to the literary evidence, recounts many of the medieval fables which tell the story of Reynard with a delightful and appealing rustic humour- simple, direct and often bawdy. Reynard's encounters with Chantecler the Cock, Tibert the Cat, Bruin the Bear and Isengrin the Wolf are all described, and so are his disguies as mistrel, monk, pilgrim and priest. For would-be huntsmen Dr. Varty provides good advice from medieval hunting manuals, and he also includes a selection of anecdotes about behaviour of Reynard's twentieth-century descendants." - dust jacket. About the book >.>.> Christine de Pisan is one of the most in- teresting French authors of the later Middle Ages. She was a professional writer with patrons in court circles and her works include biography, moralizing treatises with a strong patriotic note, and a large quantity of verse. In the past she has tended to be neglected, but during the last thirty years her work has come to be better known. She is now regarded as one of the really important French writers of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Altogether she composed about 300 bal- lades, 70 rondeaux, and 20 virelais, mostly between 1393 and 1412.
